The shades sold at Alaire Living are sourced from some of the best parasol manufacturing brands in the world. While Alaire strives to provide high-quality shading solutions, regular maintenance is essential to prolong the lifespan of your parasol.

To simplify care, parasol maintenance can be divided into four main areas: the canopy, the mast, storage, and repairs.

Canopy

The canopy of your parasol can typically be removed, which makes cleaning easier. Depending on how dirty it is, you can either hand-clean it or, if dry cleaning is necessary, we recommend contacting a specialist familiar with polyester and polyacrylic fabrics.

For light dirt and stains:

  • Use a soft, clean brush to remove dust and debris when the canopy is dry.

  • For light stains, use lukewarm water, a soft brush, and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and allow the fabric to dry completely. Apply a commercial weatherproofing agent to protect the fabric from moisture, dirt, and environmental exposure.

For mould stains:
Mould stains are typically caused by prolonged dampness and may appear as yellow, green, or brown patches, sometimes accompanied by visible mould. To prevent these stains from forming, follow these tips:

  • Always reopen a parasol that has been closed while wet or damp, and let it dry fully.

  • Even when stored with a protective cover, humidity and mould spores can affect both the canopy and the cover. Open and air out your parasol periodically.

  • Avoid leaving the parasol outdoors during winter, as condensation is more likely to form, remaining trapped inside the cover due to reduced ventilation.

General maintenance tips:

  • When opening, closing, or adjusting the parasol, ensure the fabric does not rub against walls or get caught in the frame.

  • Always close the parasol with the fabric panels folded outward. Prevent it from flapping in the wind, which causes wear and tear.

  • Never store the canopy when it’s damp or wet for extended periods, as this may cause fold marks or colour variations, especially in lighter fabrics.

  • Remove fallen leaves or insect droppings immediately to avoid staining and bacterial build-up.

  • Never use aggressive detergents with a pH of 7 or higher.

Mast

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, but exposure to salt or chlorine may cause superficial brown spots. These don’t affect the structural integrity of the parasol but should be cleaned to maintain the appearance.

  • If brown spots appear, wipe with a sponge (following the direction of the brushed finish).

  • For stubborn marks, use a stainless steel cleaner.

Aluminium

Aluminium requires minimal upkeep. Simply wipe with a damp cloth and dry with a soft cloth.

Teak

Teak is a popular material for parasols due to its excellent weather resistance. Over time, it develops a natural patina—a silver-grey finish.

  • If preferred, this patina can be removed using a soft scouring pad and warm water.

  • To maintain the original golden colour, apply teak oil after cleaning. This not only preserves the colour but also delays future patina development.

Eucalyptus & Ash

These hardwoods are sometimes used in parasol frames and are typically varnished. Preventative maintenance is advised at least once or twice per year, depending on environmental exposure.

Maintenance instructions:

  1. Remove the canopy to avoid staining the fabric (not necessary if only the mast needs care).

  2. Clean the mast and struts with a clean, damp cloth. Let them dry completely.

  3. Lightly sand the frame using 240-grit sandpaper for wood.

  4. Remove sanding dust with a clean cloth.

  5. Rub the frame with a clean, oiled cloth and let it dry for at least one hour. Pay special attention to cut edges.

  6. Wipe again with a dry cloth.

  7. Reattach the canopy, if removed.

To ensure longevity, keep wooden parts as dry as possible and always use a protective cover when not in use. Remove dirt with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Storage

Extended exposure to sunlight, wind, rain, snow and other extreme weather conditions affects the life-span of the parasols. Although Alaire offers parasols of high quality that that meet the industry standard for outdoor items, weather-related wear and tear over time is not avoidable. To reduce this issue and increase the protection of your parasol, we greatly recommend that a protective cover is used everytime it is outdoors and not in use. We also recommend that it is stored away during the winter months.
